Effective Testing of 5G Radios and Antennas

Summary

This chapter focuses on the testing methods and challenges for 5G radios and antennas. It investigates both calibration of the 5G antenna systems and the performance testing of 5G radios. In the calibration of the 5G antenna systems, phased array antenna‐in‐package calibration challenges and solutions for 5GmmWave are detailed. In the performance testing with the goal of evaluating 5G radio performance, such as throughput, under realistic spatial channel conditions, two test solutions in standardization i.e. the multiprobe anechoic chamber and wireless cable over‐the‐air (OTA) testing, are described. The chapter provides some future challenges and works for 5G radio system testing. OTA radiated testing involves testing the wireless device performance without the need for an RF cable connection to the device under test. The effectiveness of the wireless cable method is evaluated based on the level of isolation, which is the power difference between the desired link and the undesired crosstalk link.
