Dynamics of Lipid Profile Parameters After Mini-Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy Combined with Single Anastomosis Sleeve-Ileal Bypass (SASI Surgery)

Several recent studies suggest the efficacy of bariatric surgery in promoting weight loss. Nevertheless, little objective data have evaluated the impact of MGB and SASI in dyslipidemia. Thus, the purpose of the study was to determine changes in lipid profile components in patients with type 2 diabetes and morbid obesity after MGB and SASI. The retrospective study involved 57 patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 35 kg/m2. The patients were divided into 2 groups depending on the surgical intervention performed: 30 patients after MGB, 27 patients after SASI. The study assessed changes in cholesterol fractions, changes in glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose, as well as anthropometric data at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months after surgery. Preoperative serum cholesterol concentrations in the SASI study group were higher than serum cholesterol concentrations in the MGB study group. Throughout the study period, the trend toward lower cholesterol levels after SASI was significantly greater than in the MGB study group. Both study groups showed a trend towards an increase in HDL. There was also an increase in LDL cholesterol at month 24 of the study for both groups. A similar picture was observed for triglycerides. Thus, 6 months after MGB and SASI, diabetic patients with morbid obesity experienced a decrease in TC, LDL-C, and triglycerides, and an increase in HDL-C levels. These findings demonstrate the potential of surgical approaches for treating type 2 diabetes and obesity, allowing for correction of dyslipidemi.,
