Optimal Deployment of a Wireless Sensor Network to Measure the Air Quality in the City of Arequipa

The health of individuals is steadily deteriorating due to air pollution, and the World Health Organization estimates that poor air quality is responsible for at least 7 million deaths worldwide. One of the most underestimated contaminants is CO2, despite its harmful effects at high concentrations. In the city of Arequipa, the primary sources of pollution are the automobile fleet, industries, and mining activities. While pollution monitoring for sulfur and nitrogen pollutants exists, the monitoring of carbon dioxide concentration has been neglected. In this work, we present algorithms that propose optimal deployment of a wireless sensor network to establish comprehensive air quality monitoring, focusing on different population expectations.
