Power System Damage Assessment Considering Cascading Failures Under the E1 HEMP

High-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) has the characteristics of high peak value, wide coverage and wide spectrum, which can effectively couple conductor cables, causing damage to secondary equipment such as control, protection and communication equipment, and primary equipment such as transformers, insulators and circuit breakers. Meanwhile, as a large number of components are removed from operation, the power flow transfer will further expand the scope of faults and form cascading failures, which will bring great impact to the grid. This paper combines existing research to analyze the equipment failure mechanism and establish a cascading failures model that considers the influence of communication equipment. Finally, the impact of the El HEMP is analyzed by means of a public case. The results show that HEMP El has a huge impact on the grid, while the visibility and controllability of power system play an important role in defending against the pulse threat..
