Leon Chua and His Double-Eight Fingerprint [CAS Education]

Prof. Leon O. Chua, IEEE Life Fellow, the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the first Gustav Kirchhoff Award, the IEEE EDS Celebrated Member Award, and the Guggenheim Fellow, one of the most outstanding contemporary theoreticians in the area of non-linear circuits, neural networks and chaotic systems, reached 88 on June 28, 2024. A hidden symbolism can be found in the above numbers. Since the well-known fingerprint of Chua’s memristor is the 8-shape hysteresis loop (8 = 2 + 0 + 2 + 4), Chua’s jubilee (88) can thus be symbolized by the Double-Eight Fingerprint (88 or 28). On this occasion, there is a good reason to look back and review main contributions of Leon that have enriched the contemporary theory of circuits and systems.
