Simulation of ECG Signals Using Coupled Aliev-Panfilov Oscillators

Computer models for ECG simulation are very useful for testing computerized ECG interpretation software and systems and for educational purposes. This work considers the recently proposed oscillatory type of the Aliev-Panfilov equation instead of the modified Van der Pol equation as the pacemaking element for a coupled three-oscillator cardiac conduction system model. We simulated ECGs of several typical arrhythmias and compared the results obtained with both model variants. By changing the pacemaker model, we expanded the capabilities of the cardiac conduction system model without changing its structure. This modification allowed us to reproduce some cardiac arrhythmias more accurately and simulate additional cardiac phenomena, such as junctional rhythms, demonstrating the advantages of using the Aliev-Panfilov equation in the model.
