Design and Implementation of an Adaptive Control for Seamless Operation of Multiple Rooftop Solar PV Systems for Remote Zones with Local Grid Support

In remote areas, access to reliable grid power is limited. In such areas, an integration of multiple rooftop solar photovoltaic systems (SPVSs) with a central battery forming local grid, enables collaborative power sharing for self-sufficient system operation utilizing battery power leveling features. However, challenges arise in ensuring seamless operation and maintaining power quality when connecting these systems to local grid. Ensuring voltage quality and injected current quality by each SPVS is necessary for sensitive connected loads and for reduced system line losses. Satisfying improved grid current quality requirements is necessary to make system operation aligned to the IEEE 1547–2018 standard. To resolve these challenges, this research proposes a multisource rooftop SPVS configuration connected to a battery supported local grid with seamless mode transition features to synchronize with grid depending on its availability. Control ensures stable system operation by providing backup power during periods of low solar generation or grid outages. Effectiveness of presented control is validated through simulation studies during several extreme test cases.
