Performance Based Sizing of Battery Energy Storage System for AC Shipboard Microgrid

Ensuring frequency stability is essential for the proper operation of a power system. Moreover, with the increasing electrification of ships driven by stringent emission regulations, the installation of batteries onboard ships is a major trend. While batteries traditionally serve as an energy resource to enhance efficiency, they also possess the potential to improve the performance in terms of voltage and frequency regulation. Therefore, this paper presents an optimal sizing methodology for Battery Energy Storage Systems considering their exploitation for Primary Frequency Regulation. The objective is to determine the optimal size of the BESS to ensure fast recovery time and contain frequency deviations after a perturbation.
