Navigating the Interplay Between Digital Innovation and Ethical AI for the Development of Smart Societies: A Comprehensive Literature Review

The primary aim of this paper was to identify and explore the relationship between digital innovation and ethical AI, particularly in the context of creating smart societies. Utilizing a traditional/narrative literature review methodology, the study analyzes the implications of digital innovation and the integration of ethical AI. Digital innovation was analyzed to understand its implications on smart societies. Ethical AI was introduced as a key component that needs to be integrated within digital innovation. The study pointed out that ethical AI is not at odds with digital innovation but rather complements it; however, there are challenges at the intersection which need attention. The case studies highlighted in this paper demonstrate successful ways these two can be balanced. The emerging trends, challenges for the future, and responsibilities of policymakers and technologists among others were also brought out in the discussion. It emphasized that both fields should work collaboratively to ensure that what they develop aligns with societal values and legal frameworks— thus contributing towards nurturing inclusive and accountable smart societies.
