Combining Argumentation-Based and Model-Based Approaches for the Certification of Multi-Core Architectures: The PHYLOG Methodology

Multi-core architectures have made their way into aeronautical systems. They offer greater performance while minimizing the requirements in size or weight. Nevertheless, as any embedded systems, the use of multi-core architectures in aeronautics requires certification. The AMC 20–193 describes the acceptable means of compliance for the certification of multi-core processors through multiple assurance objectives. In this paper, we present the PHYLOG certification methodology for assisting the applicant in reaching the objectives of the AMC 20–193 through three aspects. The first aspect is the use of argumentation patterns derived from the certification objectives. The second aspect is the PHYLOG model-based framework allowing the modelling of the architecture and its formal analysis. The last aspect corresponds to the connections between the elements produced by the model-based framework and the elements required for the instantiation of the argumentation patterns in order to demonstrate the compliance with the objectives.
