Open-Source Climate Classification Package: kgcPy

Climate stressors significantly impact the reliability and performance of photovoltaic (PV) systems. The Koppen-Geiger climate zone classification, a well-established system based on vegetation, considers temperature and precipitation to characterize the climate of a specific area. In addressing the need for a versatile tool, we developed an open-source Python package named “kgcPy”(https://pypi.org/project/kgcPy/). This package allows users to determine the climate classification for any latitude and longitude on land globally. Furthermore, we are enhancing this tool by incorporating additional climate information, such as irradiance, creating supplementary climate groups. In addition to its traditional uses, such as environmental analysis for agriculture, our package demonstrates its versatility in machine learning applications. It facilitates data clustering based on environmental factors, providing valuable insights into climate-related considerations for fleet analysis of PV systems.
