Intrusion Detection on ARINC-429 Communication Bus

ARINC-429, a legacy avionics network developed in the late 1970s, aimed to standardize simple and reliable data transmission. However, its design priority was safety over security, resulting in a lack of confidentiality and authentication measures from an information security standpoint. Consequently, modern avionics integrated with ARINC-429 are susceptible to security vulnerabilities. Previous research on avionics communication protocols has predominantly focused on MIL-STD-1553. Literature regarding ARINC-429 security is limited, mainly concentrating on hardware fingerprinting. Notably, there is a lack of research on intrusion detection for ARINC-429 bus data. This article addresses this gap by utilizing supervised machine learning and deep learning techniques for intrusion detection, enhancing the security of data transmitted through the ARINC-429 protocol.
