Grid-Forming Inverter-Dominated Power System with Stability Under Large Disturbances

The future inverter-dominated power systems must have a sufficient percentage of Grid-forming (GFM) inverters to support the necessary services of the power system. Among the important services is the performance of inverters and system during large disturbances, especially feeding loads with complex dynamics. On the other hand, the performance of GFM inverters under large disturbances in high IBR-penetration power systems with dynamic loads (such as induction motor loads) has not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, we propose a GFM inverter model and a test system with up to 100% IBR penetration. The performance of the proposed GFM inverter model under large disturbances is evaluated with the test system. The large disturbances include loss of synchronous generator (SG) and starting of a large induction motor (load change) during normal operation. The simulation results showed the proposed GFM inverter model maintains the voltage stability of the 100^% IBR-penetration system under these disturbances.
