Development of an SVM based Intelligent Relay for Fault Identification with LVRT Capability

The integration of renewable energy (RE) sources into modern power grids has significantly increased, driven by the global push for sustainable energy solutions. However, this shift brings challenges related to grid stability and reliability, especially in microgrids with high penetration of photovoltaic (PV) systems. Effective fault identification and Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) capability are crucial for maintaining grid stability during transient disturbances. This paper presents the development of an intelligent relay based on Support Vector Machines (SVM) that incorporates LVRT capability. The SVM is trained using historical fault data to accurately classify various fault types, while advanced control algorithms enable the relay to maintain PV system connectivity during voltage dips. The integration of SVM-based fault detection with LVRT strategies ensures rapid fault identification and robust grid stability, enhancing the reliability and efficiency of microgrids with high RE penetration. This approach not only supports the transition to a more resilient energy infrastructure but also maximizes the utilization of renewable energy, contributing to a sustainable future.
