Volume Structure Retrieval over Vegetated Areas Using a Pair of Synthetic Aperture Radar Images with Wide Fractional Bandwidth

This paper presents a novel method which uses the frequency-dependent coherence of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data to invert the volume structure of vegetated areas. The method uses a pair of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images with wide fractional bandwidths, which are available from radars mounted on drones. The random-volume-over-ground (RVoG) model, which assumes a homogeneous volume over a rough surface, is widely used in the InSAR remote sensing community to characterize semi-transparent media such as forests and vegetation. Semi-transparent media assuming RVoG scenarios are inverted using frequency-dependent coherence measurements. A method to generate simulated radar data for RVoG scenarios is presented and the inversion results are discussed.
