Analysis of 60 GHz Radar Channel Characteristics in Indoor and Outdoor Environments

Robust indoor detection of moving objects is crucial for monitoring critical safety aspects. In addition to the radar hardware, the limitations are primarily influenced by the channel propagation characteristics, such as multipath propagation. This paper presents the modeling and analysis of channel characterization for two indoor and one outdoor setup using a 60 GHz FMCW radar. The channel analysis is achieved through ray tracing and measurements. The simulation results compare the channel spread in densely and sparsely configured indoor environments with that of an outdoor environment. A significant correlation is observed between the simulation results and the measurements. The results of the indoor analysis demonstrate different multipath reflections. Point cloud behavior is noted in the densely configured setup, whereas discrete multipath propagation occurs in the spacious setup. The analysis of the received power delay spread is illustrated, highlighting the limitations of radar sensing in indoor environments.
