Ignition SCADA System for a Programmable Logic Controller Mechatronics System

This research paper explores the application of the Ignition Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system with the Allen-Bradley Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) within a mechatronics station context. The mechatronics station, situated in the Industrial Control and Automation Lab at Michigan Technological University, serves as the testing ground for this integration effort. The primary objective is to link the PLC with Ignition software while also developing a tailored webpage interface. Central to this setup is the incorporation of an ultrasonic sensor within the mechatronics station. This sensor is instrumental in measuring the height of parts housed on the part holder, enabling the system to discern between good and bad parts based on height differentials. Through the synergy between Ignition SCADA software and the Allen-Bradley PLC, several benefits are realized, notably including enhanced real-time monitoring, streamlined data acquisition processes, and the facilitation of remote access capabilities. This study aims to elucidate the technical intricacies of integrating these systems, as well as to highlight the practical advantages they offer in industrial automation settings. By delving into the specifics of implementation and functionality, this research seeks to contribute to the broader discourse surrounding the optimization of mechatronics systems through advanced SCADA-PLC integration methodologies.
