An Approach to Teach Automation of Logistics Processes

Logistics is an interdisciplinary science. Topics related to digitalization are becoming more important in addition to mechanical engineering aspects. This is complemented by current challenges in engineering teaching. An approach that addresses these changes, taking into account the motivation of students and the framework conditions of the curriculum in teaching, is described in the following paper. The focus is on heterogeneous projects in small groups, which can be offered comparatively easily due to their proximity to the professorship's current research projects. In this framework, students learn about automation in logistics, control methods, algorithm design and testing through simulation. The module includes lectures and project work such as stereo camera calibration, barcode detection, wireless communication, 5G networks, gripper design, optimizing picking processes, and simulating queues, with the aim of enhancing student engagement due to individual project choices. Students were surveyed to evaluate the adapted concept. The major achievement is the presentation of an exemplary concept motivating students with research-related projects teaching. Finally, an outlook is given, and improvements for future implementation are identified.
