Intraday Operation Planning Performance in Jawa Madura Bali System to Ensure System Flexibility in Mitigating High Integration of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE)

Demand forecasting in day-ahead operation planning is one of the important factors in achieving optimal real-time operation in the Jawa Madura Bali Grid. However, in real-time operation, the day-ahead demand forecast may deviate since demand changes due to weather or other incidental conditions. Besides, the generation composition may vary due to unit trips, transmission disturbance, and Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) variability. Without any updated optimization, the change to increase the production cost could be potentially high. Those two significant aspects need to be mitigated to gain reliable and efficient real-time operation. The real-time operation needs a mechanism to update those conditions: change in demand and change of generation. Besides, the Operation Planning Document of PLN in 2021–2030 introduces high integration of VRE to the Jawa Madura Bali Power System which naturally impacts power system operation reliability. To cope with all those issues, Load and Dispatch Centre Units in PLN introduced intraday operation planning. This first phase of Intraday operation planning deploys four times updating the demand forecast for D-Day, updating generation composition and transmission constraints. This Intraday operation planning has been improving the accuracy of demand forecast hence increasing the system reliability accurately and preparing the resource adequacy of D-Day Operation Planning. The Intraday Generation and transmission updates ensure all the dispatch decisions are optimized hence improving the power system efficiency.
