Thermodynamic Analysis of Hydrogen Supply Chain for Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Application

This paper quantifies the energy requirement of H2 supply chain infrastructure for fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) application. The configuration of infrastructure is inland transport from an H2 production plant, into a separate H2 retail station, that utilizes standard 40 ft size gas transport module (GTM) that is prevalent in Indonesia for compressed natural gas (CNG) transport application with a pressure of 250 bar in ambient temperature. The H2 gas is then injected into FCEV tank with 350 Barg (bus standard) or 700 Barg pressure (passenger car standard), in -20 Celcius temperature. This paper fulfills a necessity of quantification of energy to enable 1 kg of H2 to be transported from H2 plant into FCEV tank. The resulting calculation yields electricity energy requirement 6.01 kWh/kg H2 and 7.53 kWh/kg H2 for pressure 350 bar and 700 bar respectively.
