A Finite Element Modelling Study of Anchor Dragging Faults in AC Submarine Power Cables

The increase in fishing activities and sea transport has resulted in a notable rise in the incidence of ship anchor-related damage to submarine cables. This phenomenon is characterized by a heightened probability of anchor-dragging accidents and a heightened degree of cable damage. Consequently, there is a pressing need to conduct a comprehensive mechanical study on this issue. In this paper, three finite element models are developed to investigate the anchor-dragging problem of 500kV AC submarine cables. The model simulates the interaction process between ship anchors and submarine cables, and analyses the displacement and strain changes of submarine cables under different dragging angles. Additionally, the model determines the corresponding relationship between the optical fiber strains and the copper conductor strains. Furthermore, the strain thresholds corresponding to the varying degrees of damage provide a quantitative standard for the alarm of anchor-dragging faults and the assessment of the degree of damage. Additionally, they offer theoretical and practical solutions for the application and protection of submarine cables. It offers a theoretical foundation and empirical evidence to inform the design and protection of submarine cable engineering.
