Comparative Study of Kinematics and Kinetics of Knee Joint between Normal Knee and Undergone Total Knee Arthroplasty during Sit-to-Stand

This study examines kinematics and kinetics data of knee joints between normal knees and patients undergoing TKA during sit-to-stand posture, using 3D motion and inverse dynamics analysis. The data included 62 patients consisting of 31 with normal knees and 31 undergoing TKA. The flexion angle of the knee joint during motion, including knee force, moment, and quadriceps force, was analyzed. The result revealed that the kinematics and kinetics data of the normal knee are significantly higher than those of the TKA group (p < 0.05). The maximum flexion angle of the normal knee and undergoing TKA groups showed 96 and 88 degrees, respectively. The maximum resultant contact forces were approximately 1,900 N and 1,500 N for the normal knee and undergoing TKA groups, respectively. The normal knee had a maximum quadriceps force of 2,300 N, while the undergone TKA knee was 1,700 N. In addition, the normal and undergoing TKA groups had maximum IE moments of 8 Nm and 3.5 Nm, respectively. The maximum VV moment was 14 Nm and 9 Nm for the normal knee and undergoing TKA groups. This study could be beneficial in developing knee implants, enhancing knee function, and predicting forces from various activities.
