Thin Books Recognition on Bookshelves Using Computer Vision

Books are an indispensable source of information and knowledge in life. Book recognition is important in many applications, such as library inventory management. One aspect of a book is its spine. This research aims to detect and extract book titles. By using Vertical Hough Lines, the lines on the spine of a thin, thick book and a combination of both can be detected well. For title extraction, we use EasyOCR. Experiments were conducted with images taken from 30 cm using a Sony α5100 camera. We used a total of 325 different books. The dataset consists of 75 images. The accuracy results for thin book detection were 87%, thick book 91%, and book combination 86%. The accuracy results for title extraction on thin books were 77%, thick books 90%, and book combinations 86%.
