Performance Analysis of Different Power Factor Correction Topologies

Power Factor Correction (PFC) is important to minimize harmonic distortion and maximize power efficiency in AC-DC converters. This research performs a comparative analysis of three widely employed PFC configurations: Boost PFC, Totem Pole Bridgeless PFC, and Interleaved Totem Pole PFC with MOSFET line rectification. Also, the closed-loop control method of these converters is explained to ensure the extraction of a distortion-free sinusoidal current from the grid. Using MATLAB Simulink and by considering parasitics in each of the converters, the study evaluates their performance metrics including Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), input power factor, and efficiency. Additionally, an analysis of incorporating a boost pre-charge diode into the Interleaved Totem-Pole PFC circuit is presented.
