A Quantum-Secure Mutual Authentication and Data Sharing Scheme for the Smart-Grid Ecosystem

The presented study introduces the Lattice-based Mutual Authentication and Data Sharing (MADS) protocol for the smart grid ecosystem (SGE), offering a distinctive solution aimed at mitigating various limitations within the context of secure data sharing. MADS leverages the robust security afforded by lattice-based encryption (LBE), specifically targeting the inhomogeneous small integer solution problem, to defend against both classical and quantum cryptographic attacks. Emphasizing user privacy, MADS facilitates secure data exchange among smart meters and neighbourhood-area-network gateways while ensuring their anonymity, thereby fostering trust and promoting engagement within the SGE. Furthermore, MADS features an efficient architectural design suitable for operation on resource-constrained devices, incorporating elements such as conditional anonymity and key management to provide granular control over data access and identity disclosure. The study analyzes MADS’s mathematical underpinning, security, and performance. MADS overcomes existing restrictions to create a more robust and trustworthy SGE architecture, giving consumers greater choice over their data privacy and protecting SGE communications. The SGE’s promise of efficiency and reliability rests on secure connectivity and uncompromising data privacy. However, classical security techniques collapse, and the prospect of quantum computing needs quantum-resistant security.
