Implementation of Real-Time Spatial Mapping for Occlusion-awareness in Augmented Reality

Augmented reality (AR) has advanced to the point where it is being used in many industries and commercial sectors as well as games. However, one of the challenges to creating a more realistic and immersive AR application is to ensure that the AR system can perform occlusion handling to allow occlusion-awareness. Occlusion-awareness in AR aims to understand the surroundings and how virtual objects are partially or fully obstructed by objects in the real world by performing occlusion handling. Occlusion handling is essential for enabling users to view virtual objects as if the users are interacting with real-world elements, significantly contributing to the overall immersion and usability of AR systems. Occlusion occurs when the object that is farther along the line of sight is obscured by an object closer to the viewer. Therefore, it is aimed to implement real-time spatial mapping in AR. To demonstrate occlusion-awareness by having the player use real objects to block virtual objects, an experiment was proposed where it requires the user to block incoming virtual objects, a zombie, using real objects from the surroundings. The paper ends with a conclusion to describe the results of the occlusion-awareness.
