Optimization for Wind Power Integration with Flywheel Energy Storage in Microgrid Systems based on Monte Carlo Simulation

To address the issue of highly intermittent power output from wind energy conversion systems (WECS), a strategy involving backup generators and/or energy storage devices is suggested. When the installed capacity of WECS increases to the megawatt level, it becomes economically impractical to rely solely on backup generators, thus necessitating the use of energy storage devices to mitigate power output fluctuations. Short-term energy storage devices, particularly the Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS), are favored due to their high-power density and suitability for small-scale systems. This paper proposes a combined system of wind power generator and energy storage device for microgrid applications, along with optimization of its install capacity and operation settings. Optimization is divided into two main sections: minimizing the installed capacity of the energy storage device and optimizing system settings. Through Monte Carlo simulations, optimal setting points are determined to minimize variations in system output.
