DC Motor Speed Control with Power Factor Correction in Common Coupling Point

Before the advent of power electronics DC motor speed control was done by ward-leonard control but the question of controlling AC motor speed remained unsolved. After the boom of power electronics the speed control of both DC and AC motors became an easy task. Compared with AC motor, DC motor has some advantages. In this paper proposed DC motor speed control done by Type E chopper with AFE rectifier. The AFE rectifier maintains the unity power factor in input side and also it may used to maintain unity power factor at common coupling point by reactive power supply or absorb. In this paper PI controller designed to control the voltage and also power factor in AFE rectifier and also PI controller designed to achieve desired speed in separately excited DC motor.
