Enhanced Voltage Gain and Modulation Techniques in Sparse Matrix Converters: Integrating a Modified Extended Boost Impedance Network

Traditionally, most converters exhibit buck charac-teristics, with conventional converters typically achieving voltage gains of around 0.6-0.7. On the other hand, matrix converters utilizing Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) techniques have the potential to attain a maximum voltage gain of up to 0.866. To address these limitations, impedance networks are often incorporated into inverters or AC-AC converters. This research focuses on integrating a modified extended boost impedance network on the input side of a Sparse Matrix Converter (SMC), offering dual benefits: increasing the system's voltage gain and eliminating the need for an input filter. Through appropriate modulation techniques, this modified extended boost impedance network can effectively boost voltage amplitudes. The proposed topology adopts an advanced SVPWM strategy, incorporating zero dc link current commutation. This modulation approach facilitates single-stage transitions and minimizes switching losses. Additionally, it allows for the conversion of variable frequency three-phase signals to fixed frequency three-phase signals and vice versa. Therefore, the proposed topology is well-suited for a range of applications, including Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECs), Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), and HVAC systems. Moreover, by augmenting the basic impedance networks, the boosting factor of the system can be further enhanced. all the concepts are verified in the MATLAB/Simulink platform.
