Contingency Analysis of IEEE 14 Bus System with Integration of DFIG Wind Farm

Contingency analysis plays a vital role in assessing power system security and operations. This research examines the effects of replacing a synchronous generator with a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) wind farm in the IEEE 14 bus system. Additionally, it investigates the influence of introducing a local load (AC or DC) to balance the electricity generated by the wind farm. The paper utilizes the Fast Decoupled Load Flow method to evaluate power system contingencies by ranking outages of lines based on the Active Power and Voltage Performance Index. A comparison is made between original system with synchronous generators and the system with the DFIG wind farm. Simulation is done using the MiPower software. The results indicate that while both systems experience severity during contingencies, the optimally placed DFIG wind farms exhibit improved performance due to reduced inertia, increased synchronizing torque, and proximity to load. The paper concludes with insights into the optimal placement of DFIG wind farms near load centers, emphasizing the enhanced voltage stability during transmission line outages.
