Using IMU Inertial Sensor For Motorcycle Kinematics Analysis

This study focuses on using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors to analyze motorcycle suspension oscillations over different years of use. IMU sensors, combined with data processing techniques like Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and mathematical modeling, effectively detect and analyze vibrations. On smooth roads, vehicle oscillations were similar. However, when encountering obstacles, significant differences emerged: 1-year-old vehicles had low oscillations at 70 Hz with rapid damping; 5 -year-old vehicles had higher oscillations at 120 Hz, with a 71.4% increase and a delay of $2-3$ seconds in damping; and 10 -year-old vehicles experienced chaotic oscillations at 150 Hz, with damping delayed by 5-6 seconds. The data indicate that suspension performance degrades over time, impacting riding comfort. This study also highlights potential IMU sensor applications in equipment inspection and maintenance to improve motorcycle suspension systems’ performance and reliability.
