Design of U-Shaped Slot Antenna with Reflector for 5G Applications

This paper presents the design of an antenna that consists of a standard rectangular patch on which a U-shaped slot antenna is embedded. The proposed antenna concentrates on the improvement of gain and makes the antenna a compact one. The rectangular patch antenna is designed at a frequency of 2.45GHz. U-slot reduces the physical size of the patch and enhances the bandwidth. A reflector is placed below the patch antenna to enhance the front-to-back ratio by blocking the radiation in the backside and improving the gain. The simulated result of gain and directivity for the four iterations of the U-slot has been improved from 1.44dB and 6.40dB to 4.26dB and 6.85dB respectively. The dimensions obtained for the compact-sized antenna are 27.3mm X 36mm. Gain and directivity obtained after adding the reflector are 4.09dB and 6.70dB respectively.
