Computational Thermodynamic Analysis of Hydrogen Production via Biomass Gasification

Biomass gasification presents a promising avenue for clean hydrogen $\left(\mathrm{H}_{2}\right)$ production, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. This study investigates the potential of this process using Aspen Plus ${ }^{\circledR}$ software, leveraging the principle of minimum Gibbs free energy to predict syngas composition and overall gasification performance. A comprehensive simulation model is developed to evaluate three distinct biomass feedstocks: mustard husk, palm empty fruit bunch (PEFB), and pellet pine wood. The model’s validity is rigorously established through validation against experimental data from the gasification of mixed woodchips and rubber wood, further supplemented by published studies, exhibiting acceptable H2 vol $\%$ differences of 0.03% and 5.67%, respectively. The research focuses on the impact of temperature on syngas composition and H2 yield for each feedstock. Simulations identify an optimal temperature range of $575-650^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ for maximizing H2 production, with mustard husk achieving the highest H2 vol $\% 20.38 \%$ at $650^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$. The developed models offer versatility for diverse applications, enhancing the potential for clean energy production through biomass gasification.
