Modeling and Compensation for Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy Actuator based on Load and Rate-Dependent Bouc-Wen Model*

As a type of smart materials, magnetic shape memory alloy (MSMA) possesses the characteristics of a large output strain and a high frequency response, making it highly suitable for the development of high-performance actuators. However, hysteresis nonlinearities exist in the operating signals of the MSMA actuators, which significantly affect the actuator accuracy. This study involves experimental measurements of the open-loop properties of the MSMA actuator under various applied mechanical loads and input current frequencies. Based on the experimental test results, a load and rate dependent Bouc-Wen model and its inverse are discussed to model and compensate the negative features of the MSMA actuator so that the actuator property can be effectively improved. Finally, the proposed modeling and compensation methods are validated.
