Technological Advances in Bioproduction: An Innovative Photonic Platform for Real-Time Monitoring of Impurities

The recent COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the urgent need for flexible and innovative vaccine production capabilities. Producers of vaccines and recombinant proteins such as monoclonal antibody (mAb) have had to adapt to meet unprecedented demand by increasing production capacity and adjusting production lines. Indeed, real-time monitoring of impurities such as host cell proteins (HCPs), in a medium rich of protein of interest during downstream processing (DSP) is crucial for maximizing yield and efficiency. A silicon photonics platform, utilizing biofunctionalized Mach-Zehnder interferometers, offers a promising solution for rapid and specific impurity quantification, enhancing the speed and accuracy of bioproduction processes.
