Feasibility of measuring phase relaxation time with subpicosecond pulses

Techniques to determine the phase relaxation time of absorbing dye solutions are evaluated. It is shown that, contrary to a recent paper by Cho et al., transmission of low intensity pulses cannot yield information on the relaxation of broad-band absorbing transitions.
