Impact of Parallel Interference on FMCW Radar Detection in Indoor Environments

This paper presents a simulation framework to examine the impact of mutual parallel interference among FMCW radars, considering channel effects like multipath and fading. The simulation employs a comprehensive radar signal processing chain that incorporates realistic antenna patterns, ray tracing, and the analysis of actual hardware configurations, including a Butterworth low-pass filter. Interference arises as radars become increasingly integrated into indoor environments, leading to significant levels of multipath interference. Consequently, radar signals at 60 GHz are modulated to capture safety-critical information about the surrounding environment, including mobile objects such as pedestrians. Propagation parameters are simulated using the electromagnetic field simulator WinProp and further processed within a Python environment with a complete chirp interference model. This simulation workflow yields insights into the radar channel, where real measurements fail due to precise radar synchronization or identical chirp slopes.
