Effect of Data Compression on Crack Location Prediction Using Acoustic Emission Sensor Arrays

Acoustic emission based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) sensors are installed on structures for continuous data collection to determine anomalies (e.g., crack, corrosion) and prevent unexpected failures. Due to the aging infrastructure in the world (e.g., pressure vessels, pipelines, power plants), the demand for SHM sensors for 24/7 monitoring has increased dramatically. Acoustic Emission (AE) method is a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) method based on detecting and characterizing elastic waves released by rapid release of strain energy from a localized source (e.g., crack growth) within a material.
