Statistical Estimates of Intentional Electromagnetic Interference in Unshielded Twisted-Wire Pairs

A recently developed worst-case/statistical approach to assessment of radiated intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) in general multiport systems is here applied to the special case of an unshielded twisted-wire pair (TWP). Worst-case analysis overcomes lack of knowledge on the waveform of the electromagnetic pulse, while statistics take into account the random incidence and polarization angle of the impinging plane wave, as well as non-uniformity of wire twisting. The worst-case peak of the induced-voltage waveform and the worst-case dissipated energy in TWP terminal loads are characterized through cumulative distribution functions. Significant properties are inferred with reference to common-mode and differential-mode quantities.
