Enhancing Soft Skills in STEM Education to Bridge Gaps for Global Competitiveness in the Tech Industry

In today’s technology-driven professional environment, soft skills are increasingly essential for success, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These skills encompass communication, leadership, kinesics, life skills, negotiation, personality development, interview techniques, courtesy, and etiquette. This paper addresses the critical gap in soft skills among Indian STEM students and professionals, which hampers their global competitiveness. An online survey conducted with STEM students from various schools and colleges in Uttarakhand identifies key problem areas and proposes the integration of soft skills into the STEM educational curriculum, supported by formal assessments. Results indicate that approximately 80% of school students are unsure of soft skills applications, and higher education STEM students also lack proficiency. The study emphasizes the need for a structured approach to soft skills education within the STEM fields to enhance career readiness and professional growth. As industry experts assert, while technical skills may secure employment, the absence of soft skills often leads to job termination. This research provides actionable insights for educators and policymakers to bridge this critical skills gap in the tech industry, ultimately enhancing career readiness and professional growth.
