Effects of the Inter-Turn Short-Circuit Fault in the Stator Winding of a 5-Phase Induction Motor

Electrical machines have infiltrated the current industrial reality dynamically, including applications in renewable energy, traction, aerospace, etc. Despite the domination of three phase machines, in special applications such as automotive and aerospace, options for multiphase electrical machines are continuously explored, as multiphase machines increase fault tolerance, efficiency, and reliability. This paper investigates the behavior of a 5-phase induction motor with inter-turn short circuit faults during the steady-state operation under two different winding configurations, notably the star and pentagon ones. Extensive finite element simulations have been performed for the healthy and faulty machine to examine the effect of the fault accounting for the winding connection, fault location, and severity.
