A Novel Range Estimation Method based on MUSIC High-Resolution Profile

Radar technology is widely used for precise distance measurements for objects, yet facing challenges of range resolution limit in indoor environments. This work utilizes a novel approach employing the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm to obtain both range and angle information for multiple objects, particularly those in close proximity, where the traditional fast Fourier transform (FFT) method falls short. A series of experiments were conducted with angular reflectors to validate the enhanced range resolution of the purposed method, using a 60GHz frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar. The results demonstrate that the MUSIC-based range estimation method can effectively distinguish multiple objects, surpassing the theoretical range resolution of FFT method.
