Enhancing the Photovoltaic Performance of CIGS-based Solar Cells by Varying Their Thickness

Photovoltaic (PV) technology has garnered significant global interest because of its reputation as the most cost-effective solution for meeting the growing energy needs of the globe. CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide), indicates a specific kind of solar cell technology that utilizes thin-film materials. CIGS solar cells are produced by the deposition of a thin film of copper, indium, gallium, and selenium onto a substrate, which is often glass or a flexible substance such as metal or plastic foil. The CIGS solar cell has a superior absorption factor, over-time dependability, and inexpensive fabrication expense. The CIGS material has a modifiable bandgap that may be altered. This article presents research conducted on CIGS solar cells, focusing on ways to optimize efficiency via the use of “thickness variation”. The SCAPS-1D tool has been utilized for conducting computational simulations. The effectiveness of CIGS solar cells is examined using thickness variation from 0.06 to 0.6μm in 10 steps. Consequently, the findings presented in this publication are likely to generate increased interest among academics in the area, inspiring them to develop this structure and explore more avenues for enhancing its efficacy The highest PV metrics show the following values when the CIGS layer thickness is 600nm: PCE = 22.15%, Voc = 0.63 V, Jsc = 42.29 mA/cm², and FF = 82.64%.
