Advancements in Sub-terahertz technology for detection and imaging in reflection mode

Sub-terahertz waves, operating in the frequency range below one terahertz, has emerged as a promising tool and offer unique capabilities for security applications. These waves possess the ability to penetrate various materials, including clothing, paper, and certain plastics, while also exhibiting sensitivity to specific molecular signatures. Despite its promising capabilities, THz technology faces challenges related to source power, detector sensitivity, and environmental interference, which limit its widespread adoption.Within this framework, this work provides an overview of the utilization of sub-terahertz technology for enhancing security measures. Our goal is to develop a sub-terahertz active imaging system capable of detecting objects through reflection mode measurements. The developed system leverages state-of-the-art technologies and includes a THz electronic source coupled with an uncooled bolometric camera. Operating within the sub-terahertz range offers advantages such as increased power, reduced sensitivity to humidity and improved penetration capabilities in this frequency range.
