A Review on the Risk of Musculoskeletal Disorder in Humans Originating from Excessive Use of Smartphone

A musculoskeletal disorder is a condition that affects the muscles, bones, and joints, causing pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. These disorders can result from various factors, including repetitive movements, poor posture, or traumatic injury. The use of smartphones can negatively impact musculoskeletal health by causing repetitive strain injuries, particularly in the neck, shoulders, and thumbs. Prolonged use and poor posture while using smartphones can lead to conditions such as “text neck” and tendinitis, resulting in pain and reduced mobility. The study explores the several musculoskeletal conditions, such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Osteoarthritis Syndrome, and Text Neck Syndrome that are linked to the excessive use of electronic devices such as smartphone and laptop. This review paper emphasizes the growing tendency of neck pain in younger populations as a result of extended use of personal technology devices through a thorough analysis of the literature. The absence of an affordable pain management device that can monitor the movement continuously in the market makes this problem even more severe. The monitoring is generally carried out using manual methods or semi-automatic methods resulting in short duration of data collection. Hence, these results present a lot of inaccuracies in the analysis of musculoskeletal disorder. Therefore, there arises the need of an automatic pain management device that can collect the data and monitor it over a long duration of time. Hence, this study presents the problems of musculoskeletal disorder, its types and challenges in long term monitoring. The thorough analysis of this problem may help to raise the awareness among the humans about the need to monitor the musculoskeletal movement and would help the researchers to develop a device that can provide an early warning to the users.
