Dispersion Model of a Rectangular, Sinusoidally Corrugated, 220 GHz Backward-Wave Oscillator (BWO)

This paper describes the electromagnetic analysis of a rectangular, sinusoidally corrugated, backward wave oscillator (BWO) designed to operate in the low THz regime - ideally operating at 220 GHz. Of interest are the dispersion curves for the first few modes that will propagate through the device. Focus will be placed in analysis and “cold” simulation without the presence of an electron beam. Consideration of propagating modes and field enhancements are taken into consideration, as well as necessary conditions for the electron beam to have adequate resonance at desirable frequencies. These findings will establish the electron beam requirements for such a device and provide a foundation for particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation modeling of the device with beam-wave interaction.
