Characterization of Parallel and Series Harmonic Resonance Modes in Distribution Networks

The widespread use of nonlinear loads and the expansion of inverter-based distributed energy resources have been increasing harmonic distortion issues. Harmonic resonance analysis is essential to operate the system safely and reliably from a power quality perspective. Resonance Mode Analysis (RMA) can be used to identify and fully characterize harmonic resonance. Within this context, the objective of this paper is to propose a procedure to evaluate the concepts of excitability and observability involving parallel and series harmonic resonance modes using the RMA technique. Simulations were carried out to illustrate the application of the proposed procedure, and the respective results demonstrate its practical value.
