Toward Clinical Applications of Portable Electromagnetic Torso Scanning

The pathway taken towards the clinical realization of portable electromagnetic torso scanners is discussed. Specifically, the requirements for the imaging antennas and their design methods, phantoms for reliable lab tests, and potential and limitations of processing and imaging algorithms are all explained. Also, a summary of the initial clinical results using the systems developed over the past decade by the electromagnetics innovation research group at The University of Queensland is presented and discussed. This paper highlights various aspects of hardware and software requirements and their interrelation with the final aim of building an integrated and portable electromagnetic torso scanning system.
