Investigation and Performance Comparison of Linear Switched Reluctance Motor With Passive Segmental Mover

This article presents a new topology of a linear switched reluctance motor (LSRM) with active stator and passive segmental mover. The active stator features unequal wide teeth so that a simple concentrate winding can be used. The prominent advantages of the presented LSRM in terms of flux carrying capability, active payload ratio, and converter cost have been elaborated. A standard design procedure for the proposed LSRM is developed, which can relate the machine geometrical dimensions to design criteria such as cruising velocity and thrust. A thorough comparison between the presented LSRM and conventional LSRM with passive teeth mover is performed. The yokeless structure of the stator core is used to further decrease the stator core mass, footprint area, and iron loss. A 2-meter-long 4-ph prototype is designed and fabricated, which contains 6 units of stator sector and 24 sets of the yokeless stator core. The experimental results from the prototype are given and compared to the finite element analysis (FEA) results, which validate the design procedures and analysis above.
