Simulation and Analysis on Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Wing Stabilizers for Yachts

The wing stabilizer is a latest anti-rolling device for yachts which offers roll damping during cruising and zero speed. In this paper, we aim to investigate the lift/drag characteristics for the wing stabilizer by ANSYS. We focus on the impacts of aspect ratio on the lift/drag, so as to make reasonable suggestions on product development. Firstly, we create geometric models for wings in combination with the NACA0015 airfoil with the area 0.5m2 at different aspect ratios, $AS = 1, 3, 5, 7$. Secondly, we investigate the effects of attack angles $\alpha$=10°, 15°, 20°, 30° and motion periods $T$=1s, 2s, 4s on hydrodynamic characteristics of stabilizers with different aspect ratios by using 3D dynamic mesh technique. Finally, for practical purposes, the aspect ratio is discussed based on the simulation results.
